Arm-Bar is back after a break. We are sorry to the readers of the blog. Arm-Bar is a blog run by professionals and we try to give you the best content about health, fitness and boxing – free. All content is backed with sources, links and research bodies. We just want to have a blog where we can post great articles .. some better than others that are all free and provide good relevant content.

1 – Turn off the box

Don’t eat in front of the TV. University of Massachusetts showed that people who watch TV during a meal consume 228 calories on average than those who don’t.

2 – Calorie Control

Limit your fat intake by 50g a day. Matt Roberts – ironically just reading about him today, (Mattroberts.co.uk) one of the personal trainers to the stars simplifies it down. He says to calculate your BMR (the amount of calories your body uses each day), follow Harris Benedict Equation (66+13.7 x weight in kg) + (5x height (cm) – (6.8 x age in years) – keep to this and you should lose 1kg a week! – Arm-Bar hotness!

3 – Cut down on bread

Ban refined carbs and focus elsewhere (ban on the white breads, white pastas and rice and fruit drinks)

4 – Run but still walk

Simple actions help. Take the stairs and not the lift.

5 – Size matters

Nutritionist Angela Dowden says an easy way to measure the amount of food per plate is to use everyday objects. Example, a portion of pasta or rice should be the size of clenched fist.

6 – Don’t skip meals

You will probably end up snacking later by ordering a kebab. And skipping meals slows down your metabolism.

7 – Slow eating

Studies, repeat, many studies highlight slow eating has a number of benefits. You can reduce your intake 60-70 calories. So even if you put this to every meal – your going to loose weight and these extra simple and effortless tips go along hand in hand.

8 – Don’t start what you can’t finish

The first rule of weight loss is to be realistic. Small steady steps that are sustainable and fit in with your lifestyle.

9 – Break the fast

Eat breakfast like a king. Lunch like a prince. Dinner like a pauper. Arm-Bar Hotness.

Eating breakfast not only improves concentration, memory and metabolism, but studies show that people who ate half their daily calories first thing lost more weight than those who skimped on calories.

10 – Go green

– Arm-Bar Hotness.

Green tea or drinking a green vegetable drink first thing in the morning won’t just fill you up. It will balance your pH levels and help towards strength conditioning. Being in an acidic state disrupts the body’s chemistry and the hormones needed to convert fat into fuel. mmmmhmmm

To celebrate the launch of our new site designs and new e-commerce system, we decided to do a blog post – the great fitness tips ever, including our line of boxing equipment. Feel free to link back with love. If your a Fit veteran, or a newb to Fitness, here’s everything you could ever wish to know about training

get kitted out

If you look and feel the part – you’re more likely to play the part. But avoid spandex – unless you’re Justin Hawkins. Why? Because it is easy to start making excuses not wanting to train – if you are not missing out on essential home fitness equipment, towels, kit bags and everything you need before you start – then you already have applied the “exercise identity”

aim for a progressive overload

The basis of increasing any measure of fitness – strength, size or endurance – is making your muscles work harder than they’re used to. You must progressively overload your muscles to advance. To gain strength, you must constantly try to handle greater amounts of weight. To increase size you can increase the number of sets or reps, and to build endurance you can increase sets or reps and decrease rest time between sets. The key word is progressive. You should built-up gradually, rather than attempt too much too soon, but the concept of overloading underpins all physical training

build pyramids

Muscles fibers grow and gain strength by contracting against heavy resistance. In an ideal world you would lift the maximum weight you could handle by eight times for a number of sets, and strength. But in the real world all this would do is injure you. That’s where “pyramiding” comes in. Start with about 60 per cent of the maximum amount you could lift for one rep, and go 15 reps. Then increase the weight and decrease the reps to 10-12. Finally, add weight to about 80 per cent of your max and do 5-6 reps. This allows you to handle heavy weights after warming up, maximising your the benefits and minimising the risks of injury.

pre-exhaust yourself

This can help if you have imbalances within a muscle group. Pre-exhaustion involves using a single-joint isolation movement before following up with a multi-joint exercise. Let’s say your quads are strong but your glutes get pumped. With pre-exhaustion you do leg extensions first, then move on to squats with your quads already a bit fatigued. This way you work all your muscles as close to their maximum potential as possible. Other examples are lateral raises before military presses, and flyes before bench presses.

supercharge your sets

A superset is what you get when you group two exercises for opposing muscle groups together, for example biceps curls and triceps press downs. Doing these with little or no rest in between speed up your workout, boosts recover and is a great based pumping mechanism. You can also apply it to your back/chest, lower back/abs and quadriceps/hamstrings

focus on core training

The core of your body is the engine of the body. Your core is your back and stomach. Having a strong core will stabilise and maintain posture and prevent injury, so don’t neglect your stomach and back back exercises. Do them at the start of a session and before you tired make sure you do that little extra for maximum benefit.

slow down

It’s not about doing many reps in the quickest time as possible. Slow, controlled reps, especially on the eccentric portions (lower a weight) will produce better results.

burn and set those muscles on fire

Doing a 2-3 second short partial reps at the end of a regular set takes the muscle beyond normal point of fatigue, giving you a burning sensation as the muscle produces lactic acid. It is good for the muscle because fatigue increase the potential for strength and growth.

no easy route

Difficult exercises are actually good for you, so do not avoid them by taking the easy route to do smaller easier ones.

work super hard

Going to the gym is probably one thing. Working really hard is quite another. People find it far to easy to actually rest for too long between workouts rather than actually getting a race set going and simply working out. Race through your workout and simply get it out of the way, or even spend slightly too much time chatting to your mates. High-intensity training isn’t easy, but for maximum benefits you have to give your all, push yourself to the limits and you will find it is the only way to increase those limits.

listen to your body

By listening to your body you can find out what its telling you. A little muscle soreness is the sign of a really good workout; at the same time it is also the sign of working a bit too much. This relates to having a lot of soreness and you can take that as a warning for an injury coming up on the road. If you are in a hell of a lot of pain between workouts and reps, then you need to rest, spend a good day resting especially for pulled and ripped muscles, do not continue to work on it – remind yourself that over training will actually slow down your growth. If worst comes to worst – call your GP

confuse your muscles

Never let your body fully adapt to one training routine. If you constantly change and do a variety of exercises, sets, reps and angles of pull on your muscles you can never find time to adapt to stress. You must confuse them to keep growing

keep a diary

Keeping an exercise diary will actually help you to make sure you a handling up to any new and coming adjustments that you are working on improving. Its also helps that you will be able to keep yourself motivated and actually identify any weakness of your training routine.

get professional help

Book an occasional session with a personal trainer, even if you’re happy with your progress. He or she will be able to help you work harder without injury – even if its just squeezing in that extra rep! They will correct your minor flaws and suggest new approaches to your training to prevent any form of boredom.

Use free weights

Free weight training. Dumb-bells in particular. Dumb-bells should be the corner stone of any workout. Unlike machines, the require you to use a range of balance so you use stabiliser muscles in your workout and strengthen your core. Dumb-bells can be used for dozens of moves and you don’t have to queue for machines in the gym.

Realism

Training and exercise is not a competition. Don’t push your body too hard in an attempt to keep up with anyone else in your gym and don’t give up in despair either. Concentrate on your own form, not one someone else figure.

maintain thy form

Do not ever neglect your own form. If you train in bad position you can strong in that bad position. Common mistakes can included a flexed spine, head poking forward or down, and knees straight. If you can’t maintain proper posture the resistance is too high and you need to lower it

plan way ahead

Don’t leave it until you’re pulling on your shorts in the changing room to start planning a workout. Speak to trainer, send us an email or ask a training colleague of a fitness instructor about your workout and see if your doing it right – whatever you want to achieve. You need a clear idea of what you are going to do before you arrive. It will help build anticipation and helps you work harder and more efficiently.

build cardio fitness

Three factors to consider in cardio, always. They are:

Time

Intensity

Frequency

For example if you are running on a treadmill and doing a three mile run every single week and want to step up your game, you need to lengthen up the number of runs by half a mile every four weeks until you hit the six mile goal. Divide the run into a three one-mile section and alternate between a normal pace and a fast mile and recovery mile. Then add another session per week – make it cycling though or using a cross trainer.

add gradient to the treadmill

A flat treadmill isn’t always the same as running in a park or on your local street. A gradient that which is as low as about two percent will introduce a forward propulsive component that will force you to work that extra harder and coming closer to you stimulating “real” running.

avoid stitches

A stitch is caused when the blood flow to your internal organs is reduced and diverted to the working muscles. To beat it, run slower than normal for the first third of your run, then speed up. Slowly increasing your activity level allowing the blood flow more time to change.

keep a balance

If you play a sport that works on one side of your upper body more than the other, tennis for example, your chest muscles may become a little in balanced. Perform dumb-bell presses (on either side) to isolate individual muscles and stretch to lengthen the muscles equally.

Have a massage after exercise

Treat yourself. It’s not a luxury, when you exercise your muscles are flooded with lactic acid. Massage can bring more blood, water and oxygen into an area of muscles tissue, speeding up the removal of the acid from the body

spring workout

New Year resolutions often fail by mid-January because it’s dark when you get up, dark when you get home and sub-zero outside and if it isn’t enough for you its muddy and icy all the time. Starting training in spring so that when winter comes around again you’ve established your routine.

..enjoy winter though

When it does snow you should get outside, fast. Power walking through snow can burn over 800 calories per hour

in the summer head for the beach

Running on on sand can help build a capacity that will give you an explosive rate of power. Thanks to the extra effort, the irregular surface will help develop the stabilising muscles in the feet and lower legs, such as the calves too.

Sleep more

Eight hours of quality sleep will kip yourself a magic number. A tired body is a tired mind, a tired state and like living a bad dream – everyday. When you sleep make sure you get a nice sleep, about 8 hours so that your immune system can recharge.

stick with it

For most people especially men. An exciting hobby can seem like so much hard work and can often have many people dropping out only after a few weeks. Especially if you don’t begin to see results as soon as possible. Rest assured that it is normal to have patience. You’ve come this far so make sure you persevere. It usually can take around three months training to become a habit, and by that time you will start to look and start to feel better. In the meantime you need to start reminding yourself why you are doing this? You need to begin rewarding yourself for sticking with training and make sure that, for example a top-quality massage is an example, but even a treat like a takeaway, is better than quitting – make sure you have patience, perseverance – anything that is hard for you is essentially good for you, and anything that is easy for you is essentially bad for you.

Weekly football

Get yourself into some weekly football, there a loads of places around the country (UK) to start football, mater of fact, if you go down to a JJB soccer factory for example and are alone you will find yourself on a sub team and ready for invites, most football centers always have spares in games and you can even meet a few friends. If your not into football, you may want to start getting into a weekly swimming session for at least an hour a week or consider joining up a dance studio.

Power up

Daley Thompson the former Olympic champion says that “People often work on their fitness and only really do one part – the endurance part. They spend maybe 30-40 minutes on a running machine but would get more benefit if they mixed it with some high-intensity work. The crucial bits in sport come down to how your perform in short bursts – those half-seconds and milliseconds. But few people actually work on those”

improve your breaststroke

The straight-arm pull comes from your fingertips says Olympic gold medalist Duncan Goodhew, “Recreational swimmers often allow their pull to continue too long, rather than quitting while ahead. With a long pull it’s difficult to get the hands back on their starting position – which allow practice to short strokes, keeping the pull completely in front of the body.

breathe properly

“Most people forget that breathing is crucial to their performance – including inhaling, exhaling and doing this constantly and rapidly whilst in exercise”, says former Olympic cyclist John Howard. “This stimulates the flight-fight mechanism and is very inefficient. If you can elongate and control each exhalation, you can actually improve your cardiovascular conditioning.

Better triathlete

Peter Sandvang, three-times world long-distance champion says “On the swim, stay in the slipstream of the swimmer in front. It will help you carry you through the water and save at least five percent of your energy. On the bike, take it more easy and spread your training with time by cycling at a pace that you find ease in. It is tempting to give you nothing in reserve. On the run, find a good, steady rhythm and make sure you stick to it”

score like Ronaldo

Having sex a couple of hours before the match actually helps key to success according to Brazilian footie ace and World Cup winner Ronaldo.

Everything needs shaking

“Try not to stick to rigidly and to certain workout on set days”, says Chris Jones, fitness consultant to triathlete Simon Lessing. “Have a more instinctive approach and do the harder training when you’re ready. This will make sure it’s a high quality-workout and not bland.”

work on agility

Running around a load of cones and spinning around one way on a pitch is not something that will make you into a England Rugby star overnight. “You can still do drills, ladder drills by using a stepping in and out of them whilst they are on the floor. It’s been instinctive to me since I was really young, but it’s definitely something you can work on”, it will benefit you in every area of your training, as you will notice that when you try to lift weights after regular agility workouts, they will flying lightly in your arms!

Improve your explosive power

“Try plyometric quick jumps” says Steven Gerrard the Liverpool football star. You can do this by setting out six cones or markers at 18-inch intervals. Jump between each marker using both feet, concentrating on the speed of the jumps rather than the height. It will make sure you’re always balanced and in control.

Land a knock-out punch

Stand with your weight on the back foot and aim at the head. Boxing legend George Foreman says that spinning on the ball of your back foot as you throw a punch, simultaneously turning your leg and help, shifting your weight onto your front foot for power. Use a bag rather than other peoples heads – boxing is great for strength, speed, power and coordination.

be quick out of the hood

“Sprinting at the end of your training is counter-productive” according to England football coach Richard Hawkins, “You’ll benefit from more doing speed work early, just after you’ve warmed up”

Practice, practice, practice!

If the technique of any method is correct, then you can can into it essentially 100% and you will have commitment that and it will come out right. What this means is that you can’t let those worries stop you from playing the way you play. Jonny Wilkinson, before that World Cup-winning drop kick

Positive thinking

Exercise releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins, so you’ll feel happier and less stressed after a workout. Never use stress as a reason NOT to exercise.

Be smarter

People who set Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic, Time-framed, Exciting and Recorded goals are more likely to succeed than those who simply “do their best”. You don’t go to work and say, “I will do my best and as much of my job as I can over the next few months and see what happens”. Don’t do it in the gym either and become what is commonly known as “a gym sinner”

go for a quick fix

You can make short-term goals and make you set set them every two weeks, you can be assured that they help you become fitter and healthier, whether it’s cycling to work or eating five portions of fruit and veg a day. Small changes can have a big impact.

team work

Exercise can be social, so make sure you speak to your friends and make friends whilst in the gym. You find it can be more easy to become more motivated if you have a friend or partner that you are doing the training with. Even greeting people at the gym can make it a happier place

manners!

It’s fine to ask to do a quick set on a machine if someone’s resting between theirs, but don’t demand it. And don’t be possessive either. Many people hate the fact that their is someone stood hammering right above you telling you to hurry up.

Press-ups to slumber land

Too busy to exercise? That’s no excuse. Do press-ups (with hands shoulder-width apart and your back straight) for five minutes, or until you fail, before bed every day and you’ll feel stronger within a month!

Get in the sauna

Saunas are a great way to unwind after a workout as the dry heat relaxes relaxes muscles and helps to flush out toxins and impurities, such as lactic acid, that have built up during exercise.

concentrate!

A lack of focus when exercising can lead to injury. Try the following exercise: sit in a comfortable position, relax and empty your mind. Slowly count to ten, thinking of the figures alone. If your mind wanders, start again. Repeat several times. Done once a day, this will help you and improve your focus.

Visualise success

Success has lovely aroma to it, better than white attar Arabian musk. Use all five senses and don’t only see things, but hear things, hear what goes on, smell, taste the sweat in your mouth and feel the steel bar and what’s it’s like to go through the movements. This benefits ordinary people lifting weights as much as it helps elite sports men

Use it and don’t lose it (Hot Sex)

There is no point in going to the gym three times every week and then spending the rest of your spare time dozing on the sofa. You can read, walk, travel, study and even start discovering the great new health physical benefits of being in good shape – like outdoor adventure, to hiking to better sex. Once you’ve learned how much more fulfilling your life can be you’ll never want to go back! Having good hot sex at least twice a week can prevent the common cold amongst other benefits.

Breakfast

Make a direct difference to your day every morning. According to the American Heart Association, a boiled egg is the best way to go. The AHA has also removed its previous limits on weekly egg consumption – as long as you diet your fine. An average egg only contains 1.5g of fat, and 72.5% of it all protein. Here’s the low down on the perfect Egg. Place the egg in a small pan and cover with at least 3cm (1 inch) of cold water. Add a pinch of salt and set at a high heat. When the water is just shy of boiling stir and set the time at three minutes for soft boiled, five minutes for a firm yolk and seven for a hard boiled egg. Now reduce the heat so the water is bubbling and stir again carefully. Done. Remove with a slot spoon and serve immediately.

Work Shade

Make sure your surrounded by colour/color.The Science Journal published a research article stating that certain colours improve your work productivity in different areas. Seeing the colour red makes you more accurate and blue increases your creativity. Researchers at Columbia University, New York, tested 600 people and found that office workers shown red shades performed better on spell-check tests whereas the ones who ever given blue shades performed far superior in creativity.

Drink Smart

Drinking caffeine during the day is not a good idea. Whilst it can work wonders, it begins to be a problem once you start to drink it everyday. Your body becomes more tolerant and the stimulant causes less effect as an aid to concentration. Fill the void in your motivation by a sharp shot of glucose. Lancaster University has researched that a small dose of sugar can boost your memory by 50%. Sugar they say has had significant effects to memory long term boosts. They say it is linked with the spike in arousal and alertness associated with glucose consumption. Just 25g of the amount found in a standard bottle of isotonic drink can provide a positive full psychological effect in under five minutes. So your brain will be able to soak up more facts.

Listen Up

You might think you’ve heard it all before, but there is now a very sound reason for training to your own tunes. You can pump out 10% more weight. The right playlist can reduce anxiety and increase motivation and even make your kids more sharper.

Want to get fit

Stress

Stay in shape

Gain Muscle

Fun

Whatever your reasons for you being on that treadmill – keep that at the front of your mind at ALL times. So if you want to get married – keep that picture of your partner at the front of your mind ALL through your session.

You should also go over your motivations – say if you were doing it for charity and you were clocking miles – you suddenly get a stomach upset for a few days. Get back to training as your motivation for training was for charity – good motivations and sticking to them get quality results.

2 Be a DJ

Listening to music can help you take your mind off training. So make up detailed play lists on your MP3 player for each training session. If you are planning to run get a running playlist – if your planning to walk – get a walking playlist in. Your mood can pick up with a favourite song and can keep you going way past your struggle points. Personally if I was running at full pace for 5 mins and wanted to stop I would put music on and realise I can go way past my “mind limited zone”. Go over things to do in your training and think about some healthy food – talk to your friends – do anything that will keep your mind off training.

3 Focus on Success

Think about how you made it through other times and you’ll find it’s great way of convincing yourself that you can get through it. I thought regularly about time without a job, hanging with the bad crowd, problems at home and at college.. and only to come out on top of all those.. and when I think about that – it really helps.

“Authenticity is the key to influence – and therefore success in the workplace”, says corporate psychologist Ben Williams (benwilliams.co.uk) A must read. Check out the photo to understand!

To be considered authentic you need to display a mixture of traits – including transparency in your relationships, self-awareness, sincerity and trustworthiness. The good news is that you need to learn how to become a “Genuine” person. A healthy body is a healthy mind. Why is it good news? Simply put, you’re not born with it so you learn to develop it and with time, perfect it. Your character and reputation is top priority #1. Remember that.

Ben Williams says “It’s about challenging yourself to break down the way you think.”

And this is it:

Four easy steps to making yourself younger.

1 SPRAY / AFTERSHAVE

The scent of your youth days may be Lynx Java and Africa and the occasional XL in the P.E locker room, however, your older now so upgrade your aroma. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that “linalool” a natural scent in fruits lowers the stress hormone level “cortisol”. Get yourself some Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme Sport – the scents of orange, and grapefruit will make you smell and feel more like a modern gentlemen and lower stress levels.

£30-£40 from Amazon – Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme Eau de Toilette Spray 50ml

2 LIFECYCLES

Cycling to and from work a few days a week will make your body nine years younger – wow.
The average pedal to work is 8.7 miles which means that just three days of eco-commuting is enough to keep you upright and roll back the years to keep ageing in the slow lane.

Barracuda Classic bikes, £100 suspension bike – Barracuda Arizona Alloy Full-Suspension Bike

3 HEAD START

Marmite is full of vitamin B. Vitamin B contains B12 folic acid, an effect inhibitor of over production in homocysteine, an amino acid associated with Alzheimers disease. Love it or hate it, get some down you and get a full extra bit of breakfast to to ensure your mind keeps well and young in your twilight years.

Honey, good natural honey is good to, especially because it’s summer honey can reduce your pollen hay fever problems as well increase memory, reduce anxiety, clean your skin, refresh your mind, act as an anti detox and much more. Arm-Bar writers love good honey. New Zealand Natural Food Co Organic NZ Soil Assn Clover Honey 454g

4 HEALING

The Royal Edinburgh Hospital discovered that sex three times a week can make you 10 years younger. A decade long study of 3,500 European and American men found that sexual activity was second only to physical exercise when it came to staying sprightly. Sex releases testosterone which strengthens your bones and muscles. The pleasure releases chemicals in your immune system to ward off the ageing effects of general ill-health. Being in a relationship with a younger woman helped even more. If she is not game either get some new underwear or tell her that it makes women 12 years younger, too. Get some womens underwear and while your there read The Secret Body Language of Girls.

A diet high in iron is vital for men who exercise because of its role in transporting oxygen around the body. But iron deficiency causes other problems, including tiredness and difficulty concentrating. The NHS recommends at least 8.7mg per day for men. Here are the best foods to up your intake.

Bran Flakes 20mg per 100g

Drinking a glass of vitamin C-rich orange juice with these foods will help the body absorb more iron.

Sesame Seeds 10.4mg per 100g

Sardines 4.6mg per 100g

Grilled rump steak 3.4mg per 100g

Crab 28mg per 100g

So why do you need Iron? There are many benefits of having an iron rich diet.

Benefits

Iron is anti cancer

It boost the body’s energy level and as a result will improve physical performance.

Improves the body’s immunity

It encourages restful sleep and prevent insomnia

It also helps in preventing difficulty in learning among children

Who Would Benefit?
The adult RDA for this mineral is 14 mg daily, equivalent to a handful of dried apricots or a beefsteak. However, in treating certain health problems, the amount can be increased. Certain people may find that iron supplements could help them maintain a healthy body. If you experience the symptoms below, ask your doctor about the possibility of taking iron supplements

Painful Periods
Iron supplements may help to ease the pain associated with monthly menstruation. You may need to take the supplement daily.

Fatigue
If your doctor believes that your weak body or frequent fatigue are associated with poor iron intake in the diet, your condition can be improved by using iron supplements.

Improve Concentration
Young girls who have poor dietary iron intakes would normally have academic problems because they just cannot concentrate in their classes. Iron supplements have been proven to be beneficial in this scenario.

Treat Anaemia
If you have this health problem, your doctor would normally prescribe you with iron supplements.

What most people forget is that they contain the mono-unsaturated fat – the good stuff. Studies suggest that fat delays muscle fatigue. According to the British Journal of Nutrition, almonds keep you slim by controlling appetite. They’re also full of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes.

There are a number of ways to enjoy your serving. Cashews in stir-fries, almond butter on oatmeal and walnuts – just mix and match.

Cheese

The Myth “Diary is high in fat and causes you to gain weight”
The Truth

Cheese is also fatty. However cheese is rich in calcium and magnesium and protein. Cheese is readily absorbed and used to repair muscle. Both Berdan and Clarke say runners can budget in one serving of full-fat cheese a day. Hard, aged cheeses like Parmesan, Swiss and Sharp cheddar are higher in protein and calcium then softer cheeses.

There are a number of ways to enjoy your serving. Cashews in stir-fries, almond butter on oatmeal and walnuts – just mix and match.

Potatoes

The Myth “High-Gl foods are bad for you.”
The Truth

Baking potatoes do have high Gl (as opposed to new sweet potatoes), but they are actually very good for athletes, especially during ultra events. The high GL means that a potato’s carbs will reach the muscles more quickly giving a instant boost for running. Because these are complex carbs it will make you last longer when running.
Check out Nancy Recipe a day to make the potatoes salad in the image..

Red Meat

The Myth “Meets like beef are high in saturated fat.”
The Truth

Some cuts are fat. Others.. well others make my mouth water. Other cuts can be as lean as chicken. Red meats are rich in thiamin, riboflavin and B6. These are needed for energy production and improve endurance.

Did you know that the CIA have been known to use mind focus tactics for their training schemes. An example you ask? Well, next time your lying in bed about to go to sleep, look around the room or try to focus on the light (now turned off), look at your light bulb for 5 seconds, really focus on it, think nothing but the bulb.. now close your eyes for 30 seconds or so and try to focus on that bulb and that image in your head – nothing else but that image. You will slowly see it disappear within the blackness of your inner eye – bring it back and try focusing in whilst still having your eyes closed. Keep doing this by opening for 5 seconds and continue to close and focus. Within a few weeks you will have some real raw focus skills and your mind will be stronger. Anyway.. to the interview..

We got to interview Michael Darbyshire – a fitness mind coach. Take a quick read and learn how you can change your perception of training through mind training. If you can conquer your mind whilst training you can switch off – training more than ever and without feeling or thinking tired. It’s like a legal and non-intoxicating stimulative.

Mind Over Matter

Sports Mind Coach Michael Darbyshire explains how Boxers and Martial Artists can put their grey matter to good use.

Can working on the mental side really make someone a better fighter?

Sure. If you feel weak, tired or negative in a fight, you won’t feel as good as if your confident and focused. To give you an example I recently worked with a boxer and chatting to him he said “This fight is going to kill me, I’m not looking forward to it, I’m going to get beat up.” His language was very negative.

I set about changing it by getting him to visualize that the fight would be easy and seeing himself out-boxing his opponent. I also worked on making him feel powerful and focused.

The next day he fought his best fight ever, and stopped his toughest opponent ever in two rounds.

Peak performance is about three things, physical excellence, technical ability and mental focus – many athletes spend money on equipment or a coach to get an extra edge and think nothing of it. But they often omit the mental side. That’s a big mistake.

But there’s a perception that anyone seeing a mind coach must be mentally weak themselves?

There is but its changing. It takes a very strong person to say, actually, I want to develop my mental toughness. I’m good but I want to get even better. I want to see if there are more techniques that I can tap into.

OK, so what sort of problems can a mind coach help with?

Three things. First it can help with setting goals. Second, it can help build up confidence levels: it might be someone’s first bout and they may be nervous. So power states, breathing techniques etc will all improve performance. And finally, it can help calm the internal dialogue we all get both before and during a bout or competition – the dialogue that says “I’m going to lose” and help turn it around.

Let’s deal with each of those in turn. How can people improve their goal setting?

Lot’s of people have unclear goals. They say, right, I’m going to be a Champion and they see it in there head and that’s it. They have one chance to achieve their goals. I encourage them to set many goals. Flesh out their ambitions. What other goals do you have? Can you improve your preparation? Your mental approach? Give yourself lots of small goals, not just one major one.

What about improving confidence? Say a person wants to win a championship, but doesn’t believe they can do it?

There were lots of things I can do using relaxation, visualization and various nlp techniques. Another thing you can do before a competition is to think of all the negative things that may happen. Analyse them and ask yourself, is there any validity in your fears? If there is, work on them in training, if there isn’t concentrate on the things you are good at. Often I get them to make notes about the things they are good at to say it to themselves over and over to reinforce self-belief.

Does that sort of thing work?

Yes it does. Its very powerful because it brings to the conscious level the things you like about yourself. So when your going down a negative path you can stop it in its tracks. With repeated practice your unconscious mind stops thinking negatively.

What about internal dialogue you get during a bout or competition? How can they turn it around?

Focus on being in the present. Forget about what happened 30 seconds ago. Perform each technique at a time. So if you didn’t get a good start to a fight, get over it. You still have to think strategically. Relax don’t tie yourself in knots. There is still a long way to go.

And if you have a loss?

Put it in context. There are many reasons we may have off days, it could be family or relationship problems or something else. Work on your mental toughness and preparation during your off-season. And remember, there’s always another competition.

HEAD – Your head should always be in a neutral position – eyes on the ground 10 to 30 metres ahead. Don’t let it bob: it’s less efficient and can lead to neck pain.

TORSO – Run tall. A straight back promotes optimal lung capacity and a powerful stride. Your torso is the centre of gravity.

SHOULDERS – Keep your shoulders relaxed so that they are low and loose. If they are tensed up and rubbing against your ears you’re off-balance and wasting energy.

ARMS – Try to keep your arms as relaxed as possible. Make sure your elbows are bent at 90 degrees and swing them with your leg stride to drive you forwards

FEET – Your feet should hit the ground lightly, landing mid-foot, under your centre of gravity.

STOMACH – Your breathing should be controlled and relaxed. But if you find yourself panting, concentrate on breathing from the diaphragm.

KNEES – Don’t lift your knees too high – it’s a waste of effort. The lift is about driving the leg forwards and following a comfortable stride with quick and short light steps.

Chocolate is a combined mixture of cocoa paste, cocoa butter and sugar. Just saying the word cocoa is delicious enough. These days, in the commercial sector, we find starch, diverse sugars and fats – as well as vegetable proteins inside it.

Yes, chocolate can be a stimulant, euphorisant, and anti-depressor. It is not, alas an aphrodisiac according to the majority of scholars in the Science… I think it would be fair to say that “chocolateers”, would say otherwise, based on the idea which goes back to the beginnings of civilization, even before its arrival in Europe: it was the 16th century, while the Aztec’s prepared a drink called tchocoatl (made of cocoa nibs) known for its nourishing, fortifying, and even aphrodisiac qualities.

1) Chocolate contains the same addictive, crave-inducing components believed to contribute to alcoholism.

2) A 40g square of dark chocolate may have as many cancer-fighting antioxidants as a glass of red wine.

3) The ancient Mayans used chocolate. As stated above, maybe for sexual enhancement for an aphrodisiac.

4) The word chocolate comes from two ancient Indian words which mean “bitter water”.

5) The blood in the infamous shower scene of Hitchcock’s Psycho was actually chocolate syrup. Just take one bottle into the shower.

6) Chocolate makes you immortal. Well not quite, but in a study of 7,800 men, researchers at the Harvard University found that those who eat chocolate live longer than those who rarely eat it.

7) It may help for the LDL-cholesterol levels and keeping them in some form of control. It contains a type of fibre which is known as lignin and is said to be found to have this effect.

8) Seventy per cent of the world’s chocolate comes from just three places: Ivory Coast, Ghana and Indonesia.

9) Dark chocolate is the healthiest, and has the most nutrients and fewest calories, white milk chocolate is the least health and the highest in total calories. While milk chocolate is the least health and the highest in total calories. Best to ration the chocolate buttons then.

10) The swiss eat more chocolate than any other nation, with each person average scoffing 24 pounds of the stuff a year. We Brits come second in the chocoholic league, eating a shocking 16 pounds a year.

11) The average person in Britain spends around £8,000 on chocolate in their lifetime.

12) The Aztecs were thought to use cacao – the plant cocoa comes from – to boost fertility in men.

13) In its illustrious history, chocolate has been used to treat exhaustion, anemia, fatigue, tuberculosis, fever, gout and kidney stones.

Check these great blogs on chocolate if you wish to know more, including reviews, videos, recipes – these are some great sites with lots of information.

Cover models take all shapes and sizes. We’re going to focus on the slim, toned and athletic cover model for the sake of this post. Before diving into the diet plan template; essentially we are creating a diary of what you should eat in a 7 day period continuously with a well balanced diet to achieve the “COVER MODEL” status – let’s take a look at some simple steps to have in mind.

Gym sessions aside – take on high-intensity sprint training. Go to your local field with some cones, space them out and then sprint to each one, timing your sessions and try to improve each week. (Just to expand – this may seem a simple point – but imagine all the work you have to do, buy cones, organise a template and session log, time your sessions, record them, do your own graphs, look for field – this requires great work and great reward.)

Workout everywhere – no matter where you are, make a good attempt to workout everywhere – hotel gym, travelling? Hit a morning jog for 30 mins

Lift weights that you can actually lift – it avoids injury, makes your comfortable and is the best advice your going to get “don’t try and lift the biggest weights you can”

Eat well before you train – Get a double-espresso for an instant energy hit and eat a good 2 hours before you hit the gym so that you food digests fully.

The cover model meal planner.

Every year in the UK 150,000 people suffer a stroke, according to the Stroke Association, while three in five people don’t know they should limit their daily salt to 6g.

In a review of 13 studies, researchers analyzed data on more than 170,000 people and found a scarily strong link between too much sodium and cardiovascular disease and stroke. As in eating just 5 extra grams of salt (about a teaspoon) daily upped the stroke rate by 23 percent. As in that same 5 grams of salt increased the cardiovascular disease rate by 17 percent.

The researchers say cutting 5 grams of salt daily around the world could prevent more than a million strokes and 3 million cardiovascular disease deaths per year. Yikes.

1 – Buy Fresh

One of the easiest ways to lower your intake is to buy fresh food instead of prepared and packaged, which is where most of your daily dose comes from.

2 – Check the label

Even seemingly healthy foods such as bread can be high in salt. Foods are said to be high in salt if they contain more than 1.5g salt (or 06 sodium) per 100g. Low-salt foods have less than 0.3g salt (or 0.1g sodium) per 100g.

3 – Break the habit

It’s easy to add salt after cooking, but this is often down to little more than habit. Stop shaking tons of salt on your chips, your rice and food. Leave the cellar in the cupboard and not in the middle of the table. More often than not you’ll forget about it!

4 – Buy Try before you sprinkle

Taste your food to see if it actually needs salt. You can flavour your favourite dishes with lemon juice, garlic or chilli power or from a mixture of herbs.

5 – Pick a substitute

Low-sodium alternatives, such as Lo-Salt, provide the flavour but use potassium instead of sodium, which is the main cause of health problems. However, people with kidney problems shouldn’t use these products.

A common type of injury that you will know is your knee and the back of your lower leg. It is a common injury, a painful and a difficult one to recover from completely – it’s a shame when you’re in pain as you can’t train to your full capacity. The knee joint has to support the most bodyweight, thus making it the most vulnerable to any injury sustained through training. Because of the movement and weight of your body, as well as the impact of training – especially when running – it’s critical that you know the most common ways you can injure you knee and the most common ways to repair it. The most common injury is called patellar tendonitis, an inflammation of the knee tendon that is caused by overuse.

Patellar tendonitis is common in sports that involve jumping or changing direction quickly and regularly like football and running. It can be painful in itself but has wider implications because it places additional strain on the hip and knee joints, which could lead to further injuries and more time on the sidelines. Follow this three step series of wall squat exercise to treat the problem and strengthen your knees.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Phase One

Aim: Improved elasticity
Duration: Two weeks

Start by standing on your injured leg and leaning your back against a wall – keep your foot about 60cm from the wall. Keeping your foot in line with your knee and hip, slide down the wall until your knee is bent at around 30°. Hold for 30 seconds before putting your other foot down and using both legs to return to the start position. Perform three to five reps.

Phase Two

Aim: Improved strength
Duration: One week

Exactly the same as phase one – except one change. Increase the angle progressively to a 45° then 60° of flexion at the knee.

Phase Three

Aim: Improved Speed
Duration: One two to three weeks

Starting in the same position, lower your knee down to 45° before returning up with both legs. Do three sets of ten reps slowly, taking three seconds to go down and three up. Increase the speed of the return in the second week and go as fast as you can in the final week, as long as the knee is pain-free.

People often think that the cause of injury is due to lack of experience or over experience. We all know it does vary but as a pilot would describe the way to get a perfect plane landing, they would describe “a perfect approach”. A perfect approach is aligning the plane with the runway from a great distance and getting a low speed to slowly descend to the run way, as if your walking down a long hill with no steepness. I think warming up by stretching for ten minutes at least before you start training; then when you finish, a full complete cool down by walking and stretching out too. Taking it easy at first and building up.

How often are bloggers tell you ways to loose weight? I wanted a different angle and decided to talk about the most of the common things we do which can have devastating effects on us as to regards with putting on weight. Simple steps can help put a stop to quick and lasting weight loss. Gaining weight, not surprisingly is easy, we are bombarded with food adverts and tempted every single day with food campaigns from marketers and window shop menu signs. Just yesterday, I was watching My Wife and Kids on Sky and it’s the episode where Michael Kyle and his wife get together against each other for a friendly football tournament with their children – it turns nasty in the end with both parents fighting for the girls teams to win the game – the last part of the episode got to me though – Pizza. Pizza is my favourite food and I can tell you Arm-Bar.co.uk will most definitely start talking about it more and more. The quick instant glance at a team eating Pizza and soda was nearly enough for me to go out late and buy a Pizza to myself and park up on my own and – as they say “scran up”.

Let’s follow these simple five steps that put the weight on, learn them, memorise them – and then completely avoid them. If these are some of your bad habits, you may need to look at removing them.

For the record, I am very good at graphics – especially when it comes to vectors, lord knows how many vector stock images I have made. I went for a cow sign – hoping to get some comments and add so randomness to Arm-Bar.co.uk – tell me if it was pathetic or strange.

1 – NOT MOVING ENOUGH

Being stuck in the office all day you become connected with long hours, TV, no work breaks, over time, night working, driving around and everything else that keeps you still as a lemon.

SOLUTION

To do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, you could even exercise at work, you need to anything, run, jog, walk to the bus stop and take the train, don’t take a tram and go for a walk instead, anything that will keep you committed to doing at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. A small tip, remember it: Even lifting your arm (taking a brake from typing) is exercise. You could argue that shaking someone hand is a form of exercise. So keep it moving.

2 – SLEEPLESS NIGHTS – INSOMNIA

Not sleeping enough not only makes you mentally unwell, it makes you put on weight according to some studies.

SOLUTION

You need around 7-9 hours of sleep a day.

No coffee or tea after 2pm – some people say after 4pm – its a choice matter but the less you have the more hours you will get. Tip. Not having any fizzing drinks, tea or coffee after 4.30 is a good sign. Water with some lime or lemon – even a drizzle of honey is a the better solution.

If you do not need to go to an event or place – then do not go to the event or place only go to places you enjoy – you could be sleeping instead – this sounds like the loner poster right? (It could be worded, if you can’t be bothered, you can’t be bothered)

Every night, do 1 hour of free time. Read, Mediate, Pray, listen to music. Avoid TV as its more of a stimulant.

Have some mint tea or honey with milk, take a warm shower and enter a cold room – you will feel really tired now. Read a book before bed.

3 – PIGGING OUT REALLY IS PIGGING OUT

If you put lipstick on a Pig, its still a pig – this one all gets me laughing. It is simply a fact like it or not.

SOLUTION

Avoid pigging out – even if you have a crisp packet a day (100 calories of your exercise time you don’t do, that is almost 1 pound in a month) Eat only until you are pretty much satisfied, not stuffed/full up. Eating slowly will help ensure that you can hear your body’s satiation signals and drink water or lemon water instead of juices and fizzy drinks. Benefits of eating slowly.

4 – STRESS

More stress is more weight. Remember that.

SOLUTION

Focus on breathing – count to 20 slowly, only thinking about the numbers in your head. Try this for 5 whole minutes – every time you get distracted, keep visualising the numbers, picture your hand on parchment like Harry Potter, writing away like a scholar on parchment that he never was. Just keep it going and eventually you can shut off everything – a mini meditation method.

Make note of your reactions in stress full situations, this will help improve next time when dealing with the devious office workers.

Pray, listen to music, watch some TV, unwind and try finding time to read a book – EXERCISE.

5 – DO NOT LOOSE MUSCLE

The more we age, the more muscle we lose, its unfortunate!

SOLUTION

Yoga, Isometric weight bearing exercises – weight gain is not inevitable. If you want a healthy body, follow these steps. The best advice I can give you is to go slow, when you have a bad day, don’t beat yourself up. Just start again tomorrow. Make your health your #1 priority.

Everyone knows we live in a modern, fast and digital world – the planet is changing, more and more people are connecting through social networking and more and more people are eating snacks from vending machines. Confused? It’s clearly true, there are more vending machines for crisps, chocolates, sweets and fizzy drinks then ever, especially in the UK. We are so busy and consumed with our daily lives we have adopted buying snacks on the move like sugar bag filled Coke-a-Cola and Sunny D that we have stopped to think about the long term effects.

Eating slowly is recommended for health. Slow eating reduces the consumption of food, as it postpones much of the meal to a time when the absorption of nutrients begin to produce physiological signals of satiety (feeling full). By taking your time eating, not only will the food you have eaten release signals to make you feel and think your full, it will help you relax, sleep better and unwind – you can appreciate your food and find “me time” to contemplate – gain patience and humility.

Slow eating will help you with chewing your food and this will result in the exercise of your jaws mixing with saliva with food, hence a complete efficient digestion taking place, food particles are cut into smaller pieces, not requiring much churning in the stomach or intestine.

“A bad stomach is the cause of the majority of the worlds problems” – Arm-Bar..

Do you agree with our quote above? Food causes problems to your heart, your brain – food can make you greedy, angry, depressed – over eating can of course. Eating food that causes you to feel bloated to a degree, fill and poison your bile flow will disrupt your whole body overtime. Poor stomach digestion is the cause to much of the worlds problems on a clear degree.

Take a look at three reasons why you should take your time to eat and remember our advice on the last reason #4 about balance.

1) Better Digestion

When taking your time to chew food rather than wolfing it down, you will absorb more nutrients. The digestion process begins in your mouth and not your stomach – your digestive system can absorb only a small fraction of the nutrients available in inadequately chewed food. More goodness is taken when you chew properly.

2) Less Stress

Eating at a sensible speed not only causes less stress on your stomach, it helps with relaxing your brain. Pausing to actually taste and savour the food, instead of rushing to get it from plate to gut as soon as possible, releases feel good chemicals in your brain, helping you stay happy and relaxed. It can increase your tolerance and being patient skills.

3) Weight loss

Studies have shown that you can loose 20lb (9kg) a year just by eating slower. It takes your stomach around 20 minutes to produce the hormones that tell your brain that it’s full. Eating more slowly allows you to become more full before eating – meaning you are less likely to reach for seconds on a high-calorie desert.

4) Arm-Bar.co.uk – Balance Formula

Remember this formula on balance.

Your stomach should separated into three parts; One-third for food, one-third for liquids, and one-third for breath.

If you you split your stomach into three portions, 1/3 part of it for your food which you have consumed slowly, another 1/3 for water and liquids – lastly making sure you have 1/3 of your stomach empty and free for air and circulation. This is a flawless solution to becoming more healthy – taking into account your other actives like sports and training at the gym.

Here’s three ways you can keep both your mind and body in top shape.

There’s now yet another reason to keep yourself in shape – you become smarter. The University of California (UC) conducted a research study that found people who had higher body mass had smaller brains. This included memory and planning areas of the brain.

I want to show three quick and simple ways to boost your brain, let’s face the music – if you spend 45 minutes on a treadmill four times a week, for the next 6 months – that is an average of 180mins a week which is 720mins a month which is 4320 mins half a year, which is 8640 mins of running a year. That is a 144 hours and about 6 days of running non-stop. The amount of calories you can burn, the amount of endorphins you can release is incredible. Being fit means thinking fit – I know that makes no sense, but here is a statement someone said to me at the gym: “If you look good, you feel good”.

1) Do Puzzles – Sudoku

Playing mind games, filling crosswords and continuing to challenge yourself whilst your on a train for example – is a great way to train your mind to cancel out everything around you – keep at it and you can really build a tolerance of working under pressure.

There are countless studies that have shown doing puzzles or learning a language can build neural networks in the brain. This helps you stay sharper for longer.

2) Eat oily fish

Oily fish is great food. Oily fish are heavy in Omega-3 which transports nutrients to your brain.

Oily fish are high Omega-3 fatty acids. They are vital for healthy nerve cells and help transport nutrients into brain cells. Eggs, flaxseed and kiwis are other good sources too. A monthly dosage of oily fish can help restore dead brains cells too.

Includes fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout and herring.

Omega-3 rich – which also means it prevents you getting heart disease.

Good source of vitamins A and D (did you know that?!)

3) Get breathless

Working out for at least 30 minutes three times a week will not only fight fat, it will also improve circulation to your brain, flooding it with oxygen and nutrients to keep it working effectively.

These days it’s so easy to loose yourself thinking about something. Did you know that eating food that you enjoy and have eaten before brings back those happy memories of that food? How about that sneaky chip muffin when you skipped your school lunch break to avoid school dinners?

Running is a great way to loose weight and amongst other things. We will leave the benefits of running within a different post for a different time. We want to focus on why people jump on a treadmill so eager to start running in a pool of their own sweat – only to stop and give up trying again for a long time. I think the commercials are to blame here, people think it is easy to start running a 45 minute treadmill session on level 9 and a gradient of 5% – well, it’s not. And here are some ways to make it easy for you and to motivate you to continue to run.

Play music – listen to sermons, talks life speeches.. keep your mind busy other than thinking about your running (this can apply to all exercise)

Keep picturing your prize, your new look – whatever your prize is – what your reasons are and make it a must..

Focus on success – think positive, surely you have done mistakes, surely you have had difficult times in the past..

Focus on winning, focus on success.

Thinking about how you made it through all the other difficult times is a fantastic way to convince yourself that you can get through this. There have been people who have mentioned about thinking positive – but they always fail to mention what to think about – some people need that. If you are having a bad time with your Miss/Mrs or are going through a rough patch at work – whatever – knowing that you have emerged out from other times better and stronger will resolve you to keep digging and keep the miles ticking over.

If your not planning for success, your planning for failure. Seriously, do we think that deep? Just repeat that slowly in your mind a few times and think what you define as success. If you are not planning (and working) for this that what are you doing?

Picture your prize

Why are you training?

What inspires you?

What does success me to you and how do you think you can get it?

All the reasons you have about why your training – put them in front of you. Literally try this: With your hands (we have to write pretend here in case someone does this and hurts themselves) take your thoughts all out of your head, just grab them out and them throw them on a table in front of you (imagine the table too), do this when you’re at the gym about to turn the treadmill on, tell the on lookers to go to Arm-Bar.co.uk J – now you can picture them much better. Focus on some of the goals in front of you and your reasons – maybe you want to feel confident and ultimate try to improve your career – focus on that for the first 5 mins and go on to something else.

You may be doing it for a charity – again, going over your motivations get you through the tougher moments.

One word. iTunes

All actions are judged by their intentions. It would be easy for Arm-Bar to give you affiliate link to iTunes. But were nice like that.

We all know that listening to music can take your mind off the training. In fact, I have many play lists on my MP3 player (iPod 5th Generation with video), lasting anywhere between two to six hours. They mostly correspond to my mood, my training routine for the day, things that motivate me, famous talks about inspirational leaders – my list is complex like that and I like it when I train, that I have the comfort of knowing that I can listen to a 45 minute speech – here’s the gold you have been waiting for – listening to a 45 minute talk whilst going on level 6 (medium paced jog) on a 5% incline brought out 400 calories – and brought out a big smile on my face.

Nike+iPod running gear is something that I am considering. There is a power song – it only plays from what I know when you are hitting your reset goals – so if your running well you can get Rocky Eye of the Tiger to come on – anything that keeps you motivated in different ways and keeps your mind away from the training will be a great start.

Lastly. Steadfastness is the foundations to keeping successful. If your not steadfast in anything then your not going to be a good at anything (continuous), and be patient too.
